Our Story

Picture the scene: Plymouth, 1974 sees two young Italians; Luciano from Padova, Italy and Sabato from Positano, Italy, come to Plymouth following their true loves, whom they married in 1978.

Fast friends, they worked together at “Bella Napoli”, renamed “Osteria Romana” in the Barbican until 1992, when they decided it was time for them to create a different future for themselves.
Their dream became reality when they opened Positano Restaurant in 1992.
This was originally as a pizzeria, but the exceptional capabilities of chefs Andrew, John and Sabato soon grew the pizzeria into one of the most beloved and iconic Italian Restaurants in Plymouth.

The retirement in 2023 of Sabato and Luciano placed Positano, its staff and its devoted customers in a position of flux and uncertainty.
Happily, John, their talented chef of over 30 years’ service and Mario their waiter with over 20 years’ service, stepped into the breach left by these two great stalwarts, and bought the restaurant, securing its future for the years to come.
